I have some friends who describe themselves as agnostic. They believe there’s something out there, just not sure what. Some of them are more “open” to the prospect of Christ than others; but most of them are what I would call reasonable. They find it a breath of fresh air that I still embrace them as friends even though they know full well that I’m a pastor.
The truth (and this is what I tell my agnostic friends) is that there is a little agnosticism in every single one of us, whether it’s just a smidge or a boat-load. There are some things that we simply cannot know. So why pretend? I’ve learned to say, “I don’t know” or “I’m not really sure” or at least “It seems to me that…” My agnostic friends like that about me. And yes, they still come to me with questions, even though I’ve admitted my non-omniscience.
But there are also things that I think reasonable, thinking, and intellectually-honest people can know-at least in part-even if it’s just a mustard-seed’s worth of info that informs their faith. And there are ways to share these things and plenty of ways not to!
So this week in Acts, we’ll be looking at these things, considering how Paul “reasoned” with people “from the Scriptures.” Are you reasonable?
